Pointless ranting about college art classes.

Sun Oct 28, 2007, 11:31 AM
Goddamn have I had a ton of homework in the past two months. My two not-art classes are really easy, but I have three art classes that are all three hours long and have absolutely inhumane amounts of homework.

One is a drawing class in which the professor is awesome but grades so incredibly harshly that it's literally impossible to get in A. In order to get an A, one must do a better drawing than the professor is capable of doing; a perfectly good piece of student work would receive a C. I somehow get B's on all of my assignments, though. Also, half the grade consists of how far along on the project you are a week after it's assigned, so you have to get nearly all of the assignment finished within a week of it being assigned or else you'll fail the interim critique, which is, to say the least, frustrating as all hell. I've also learned that drawing on a 36x48" piece of paper is incredibly frustrating, especially when one has to sit in a public space to draw the architecture there. I think I'm learning a lot in that class though.

Another is a class called "creative problem solving" but would more appropriately be called "bullshit." The professor never seems to known what the hell he's talking about, and he comes up with the most absolutely pointless, time consuming projects possible. Plus, he never gives us any guidelines on how the projects are graded until we're actually given our grades for them, and then it's too late for any changes to be made. I think one has to do copious amounts of mind-altering drugs in order to do well in this class. This is, quite possibly, my least favorite of all of the classes I've ever taken in my life.

The most bearable of the three classes is color design, which is exactly what it sounds like. This class is really easy to me because I took a color class last year and therefore pretty much know what the teacher wants in term of content. However, the homework is still really tedious and time consuming and involves either collages made of colored paper or very clean and designy acrylic paintings, neither of which I'm too great at due to my questionable craftsmanship. Still, of my three art classes, this is the one I have the best grade in, and is the one I dread the least.

In conclusion, I have so much tedious art homework that I barely have time to do anything other than go to class, walk to and from class (the art building's a mile away from my dorm room and I always have to carry a minimum of twenty pounds of stuff there with me), eat, do homework, and sleep. In fact, I generally end up sacrificing sleep in favor of browsing the internet like I'm used to, so I'm constantly sleep deprived, which makes everything worse than it has to be.

I can't wait until I'm done with all of the foundation art classes. Hopefully I'll pass the end-of-foundations critique and get into the illustration program without having to retake any of them.

Well, it seems that you at least like 1 1/2 of the 3 tedious classes, so I suppose it's not a total loss. I know what it's like to have a really tough teacher that I love at the same time. Those are usually the teachers that I come to respect the most.

You're one of my favorite artists. Keep on keeping on. :)

Ohh it's not your fault. It's not your mother's fault. Now...you pay attention to old Rooter. It is nobody's fault. The Great Circle of Life has begun. But you see, not all of us arrive together at the end.

This is EXACTLY why I went into Natural Resources Management instead of art. I like my soul where it is, thank you.

I'm just going to keep at it even though I already hate Calder and everything in it with a passion. It shouldn't be as bad as this once foundations is over, and even if it is I figure I'll improve enough for it to have been worth it.

the start is always like that. Get the dull basics out of the way (because I'm sure you've noticed, there will be a lot of students in there who have no idea what they're doing, and probably struggle just to hold a brush properly), and then you can move on to the good stuff. This means all the no-hopers are weeded out, so you get no distracting people asking pointless questions, and you can get on with what you do best ;)

Also, I'm sure you'll soon find out, that bibliographies are an artist's worst enemy. In first year uni, we had pretty strict rules on references - we had to write a 50 word para on HOW we used each references X_X
But yeah, once that stuff is out of the way, you can get on with things and have a good time.

True story. Move off campus. It's a happier place. Not Campus West though.. unless you don't sleep ever. Then go for it!

Yeah, I don't know why I live on campus seeing as my/my parents' house is less than ten miles northwest of here. I might just live there next year, even if it means I have to drive back and forth everyday. Where do you live?
:iconsugarpeep:
Off 64th by the new Family Fair. Rent's $550, heat/water/trash included. Pretty decent place all things considered. They let us have kitties! ^.^

Awesome! Depending on what day it is, I either live in DeVos Living Center (which is in the conglomeration of freshmen dorms in the northeast corner of campus) or at my parents' house which is on Leonard a bit west of 68th. I don't know whether to stay on campus or live at my parents' house next year; I'd rather live at home but then I'd have to spend a ton of money on gas to drive back and forth everyday, plus it's more convenient to live on campus because then one can pretty much walk anywhere from one's room. So I don't know what to do with that.
